Biden and Irish Leader Discuss Gaza During St. Patrick’s Day Visit

President Biden on Sunday used a festive St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House to address the growing international concern, particularly among the Irish, regarding the humanitarian situation of Palestinians amid Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

“The taoiseach and I agree on the urgent need to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza and achieve a cease-fire deal,” stated Mr. Biden alongside Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s prime minister, who is critical of Israel’s actions in response to the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Mr. Biden emphasized that a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians is essential for lasting peace and security.

Traditionally, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House is a time for Mr. Biden to embrace his Irish American heritage. However, during this visit, Mr. Varadkar made it known that he would discuss his concerns about the Middle East conflict with President Biden.

Mr. Varadkar addressed his domestic audience in Ireland, where there is strong support for Palestinians due to the nation’s history of resistance to British rule. Ireland was the first EU country to call for a Palestinian state and the last to allow the opening of a residential Israeli embassy.

“The Irish people are deeply troubled by the unfolding catastrophe in Gaza, and we see our history in the eyes of the Palestinian people,” Mr. Varadkar expressed. While supporting efforts for a temporary cease-fire, he criticized Israel’s bombing tactics and called for an end to the violence.

The comments from Mr. Varadkar came after he condemned Israel’s actions and urged for humanitarian relief for the people of Gaza. He stressed the need for both sides to cease hostilities and allow for the safe return of hostages.

The two leaders took time to celebrate the history between their nations amid discussions about the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Mr. Biden shared his appreciation for his Irish heritage and the strong bond between Ireland and the United States, highlighting the shared value of looking towards the future with optimism.
